    • Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – Piñata (2014) | Review 12 January 2025
When you first think about the pairing of Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, it feels somewhat unexpected. Gibbs, a hard-nosed rapper from Gary, Indiana, with a raw, no-nonsense style, doesn’t seem like the natural collaborator for Madlib, an eccentric producer known for his layered, often left-field beats. But that’s exactly what makes Piñata such a standout—this […]

    • Dr. Dooom – First Come First Served (1999) | Review 7 January 2025

As one of Hip Hop’s most eccentric and shape-shifting figures, he’s spent decades dodging mainstream recognition while cultivating a dedicated underground following. Born Keith Thornton in the Bronx, he first gained prominence with Ultramagnetic MCs, whose 1988 debut Critical Beatdown left a lasting mark on […]

    • De La Soul – De La Soul Is Dead (1991) | Review 3 January 2025
The cracked flowerpot on the cover of De La Soul Is Dead wasn’t a mere visual; it was a rupture. The vibrant, swirling psychedelia of 3 Feet High and Rising shattered, replaced by this muted image of wilting daisies in a broken pot. Released in 1991, De La Soul’s second album arrived burdened by expectation, […]

Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012) transcends the typical Hip Hop album format. • Madvillain – Madvillainy (2004) | Review 23 December 2024
When Madvillainy landed in 2004, it was a cryptic invitation into a shadowy world where two of the genre’s most inventive artists, Madlib and MF DOOM, conspired to create their masterpiece. It felt like tuning into a distorted radio signal from another dimension, each song its own brief transmission before flickering out, only to be […]

    • Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version (1995) | Review 21 December 2024
Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version is an album that throws you straight into the deep end of chaos. Released in 1995 as ODB’s first solo outing, it stands as one of Hip Hop’s most unapologetically raw and unhinged records. This is not music crafted for clarity or mass appeal—this […]
